Working together for a green, competitive and inclusive Europe.
What does the ACTIV: ACT agaInst Violence! project do?
The ACTIV Project will bring positive changes to the reality of gender-based violence in the school environment in terms of attitudes and behaviour of children and strategies for preventing and combating violence by teachers.
We believe that, to reduce the phenomenon of gender violence, we need to intervene and to eliminate its structural causes: the social norms, stereotypes, prejudices, and lack of institutional intervention procedures.
In the framework of the ACTIV Project (2021 -2023), we will conduct activities with 375 teachers and 250 pupils in schools from Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. We will work with pupils aged 11-15, ensuring an equal gender representation, at all stages of the project, from the analysis of the situation to the identification and shaping of concrete awareness responses and actions. Those children who are interested in participating and are at high risk of becoming victims of violence will be involved, and the participating schools will be selected from vulnerable rural communities, especially Roma communities, with a limited access to basic social services.
In Romania, we will work with schools from Olt, Dolj, Gorj, Bacău and Bucharest (disadvantaged cities and communities).
In Ukraine, we will work with schools from the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
In the Republic of Moldova, we will work with schools from Florești, Fălești, Soroca, Nisporeni and Edineț regions.
The project is implemented by Terre des Hommes Foundation Switzerland (Romania), in partnership with the Representation of Terre des Hommes Foundation Lausanne – Switzerland in the Republic of Moldova and the Separate Division of Terre des Hommes Foundation in Ukraine, and benefits from a 194,067 euros grant from Active Citizens Fund Romania, programme funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Grants Grants 2014 -2021. How will we make changes
in the school environment?

We will help children and teachers
We will help children and teachers to better and more deeply understand why gender-based violence occurs; in other words, what exactly are the reasons for which it happens (social norms, stereotypes, prejudices).

We will hold consultations
In each partner country, we will hold consultations with children and teachers from the selected schools. Children’s advisory committees will be set up in each school and they will meet monthly to develop and implement initiatives to combat GBV. Parents, school staff and community members will take part in the presentation of the initiatives co-created by pupils and in awareness-raising campaigns, in order to better understand the important role they play in reducing gender-based violence at school.

Situation analysis
On the other hand, 375 teachers will participate in the analysis of the situation and will be provided training. Teachers will strengthen their skills and develop favourable attitudes towards gender equality, transforming the school environment in the 25 schools covered by the project into an environment which promotes respect, non-discrimination, equal opportunities and fair treatment.
